Ticker

Also: token symbol, cashtag

A ticker is a token's short name, usually a few capital letters, often written with a dollar sign, such as $BONK. On X a ticker with a dollar sign works as a cashtag and lets you search for posts about the token. In memecoins the ticker is often part of the joke and the brand.

The key thing about a ticker: it is not unique. On a stock exchange the exchange assigns symbols, but in crypto anyone can create a token with any ticker, including one that already exists. So many tokens with the same symbol live on Solana or Base at the same time. A token's only identity is its contract or mint address. The ticker is for talking; the address is for buying.
